Created by EarthWatch in 2002 (an international development organization with Headquarter in Port Harcourt, Rivers State) the EarthWatch Awards was founded to annually honour men, women and organizations exhibiting exceptional creativity, courage, and commitment in improving the quality of all kinds of life in the society. The Awards aim to draw national and international attention to the laureates' contributions to sustainable development, humanity, better living, dignity and character, thus generating more recognition and support for their individuality and projects. Purpose These awards are not based on politics, or sycophancy. They are not meant to flatter or to boost further over bloated egos of men and women, and organizations that claim to be important but have nothing to show for their importance in the lives of people around them. These awards are not meant for organizations that exist for themselves only and have no characters. These awards are for men and women and organizations that have been found worthy because of what they have given, and done to and for their people and society. The purpose of these awards is not simply a pat in the back for a job well done, but in as much as it stands as a commendation, it is also a challenge to the awardees, to keep the flag flying. More than all these, we aim through these awards to make sure that history, posterity remembers that such as these, walked upon the streets of this earth. Criteria The nomination must include 1. A list and brief description of successful accomplishment in the area being addressed. 2. The nominees' history of 2-3 pages which should demonstrate the creativity, courage, character, innovativeness, and sometimes sacrifices of the nominees' in their efforts to improve life, the environment and sustainable development. The long-term impact of the Award will depend on the integrity of the Nominators and the quality of their nominations. The Award is for successful accomplishments rather than a sorority certificate. 3. Description should be as specific as possible and straight to the point. 4. Supporting materials such as pictures, websites and whatever else should be attached where available. 5. Any of following elements should be emphasize: v Consistency and integrity v Preservation and respect for the environment v Continuing impact on the people and society v Positive change for the better. Nomination Nomination is sent in from anybody anywhere in the world regardless of race or country. Nominators must include the following: 1. A signed Letter of Nomination indicating how the nominator knows the nominee and for how long 2. Biographical data on the nominee (full name, age, education, place of work, background) and a detailed history of the nominees creative projects (written by the nominator), including his/her motivation, innovative aspects, any obstacles overcome, and the impact in the society. 3. Nominators must specify whether the nominees have received, or is currently being nominated for other awards 4. The Nominator must state the Award, which the nominee is being nominated for 5. One or two endorsement letters from organizations or individuals other than the nominator and, if possible, additional supporting materials such as, newspaper articles or publications 6. A few good labeled photographs of the Nominees for possible publication. Selection An impartial jury of five constituted for this purpose annually selects awardees. Notification Selected awardees' are notified of their nomination every second quarter of the year. Eligibility 1. Any Nigerian man or woman, and organization, living in any part of the world who has done, is doing and has the vision to do more, exceptional and extraordinary services that benefit others and improve sustainable development 2. Nominees should be people currently active in promoting the goals of sustainable development environmental protection and preservation, and other activities like humanitarian and/or people development 3. Nominees may or may not have been acknowledged by other awards 4. Nominees may not nominate themselves 5. The nominating organization/individual must have direct experience of the nominee's work or character. The Nominator may be a family member of the nominee or an organization can nominate a Senior Officer 6. No staff of EARTHWATCH and her Subsidiary Organisations is eligible to be a nominator or to be nominated for these awards 7. No more than 2 Nominees may be presented by the same person/organization in a given year. Award Categories 1. EarthWatch Water For the People Award 2. EarthWatch Award of Excellence 3.
